The Alberni Valley Hospice Society is seeking a compassionate and dependable Cook to join our team at Ty Watson House, a four-bed community hospice serving Port Alberni and the surrounding region.
This is much more than a cooking position. We are looking for someone who understands the comfort that comes from a warm kitchen, the smell of fresh baking, and a home-cooked meal shared with family. The ideal candidate enjoys caring for others, takes pride in creating welcoming spaces, and understands the important role food plays in bringing comfort during life's final journey.
This position would be ideal for a retired or semi-retired individual looking for meaningful part-time work that makes a difference in the lives of hospice residents and their families.
What You'll Do
- Prepare nutritious, home-style meals, soups, baking, and snacks for hospice residents and their families.
- Create a warm, welcoming atmosphere through the preparation of fresh, comforting foods.
- Adapt meals to accommodate dietary needs, allergies, and individual preferences.
- Maintain high standards of food safety, cleanliness, and kitchen organization.
- Manage kitchen supplies and notify staff when groceries or supplies are needed.
- Assist with light housekeeping duties during downtime, including tidying common areas, light cleaning, loading and unloading the dishwasher, and other general household tasks that help maintain a comfortable home-like environment.
- Work collaboratively with hospice staff and volunteers to support residents and their families.

Wage: $22.00 to $25.00 per hour, depending on experience.

About Us
The Alberni Valley Hospice Society operates Ty Watson House, a four-bed community hospice providing compassionate end-of-life care in a home-like setting for residents and families throughout the Alberni Valley.
Ty Watson House is a 114-year-old heritage home that requires ongoing care and attention. We are seeking a reliable, skilled, and community-minded individual to help maintain our facility and grounds while supporting our mission of providing comfort, dignity, and compassionate care.
This position is ideal for an experienced, semi-retired, or retired tradesperson or handyman who enjoys meaningful work, takes pride in maintaining a beautiful property, and would value being part of a caring and dedicated team.
Position Summary
The Handyman / Maintenance Support Worker is responsible for performing general maintenance and repair tasks both inside and outside Ty Watson House, helping ensure the home remains safe, welcoming, and well-maintained for residents, families, volunteers, and staff.
Key Responsibilities
Building Maintenance
- Complete minor repairs and maintenance tasks throughout the hospice
- Repair doors, hardware, fixtures, furniture, and equipment as needed
- Perform basic plumbing, painting, carpentry, and other general handyman duties
- Monitor the condition of the facility and advise Facility Manager of maintenance concerns
Grounds Maintenance
- Perform occasional lawn mowing and trimming
- Assist with minor landscaping tasks and exterior upkeep
Operational Support
- Transport recycling to recycling facilities on a weekly basis
- Assist with occasional purchasing and pickup of supplies for the hospice
- Help move furniture, equipment, or supplies when required
- Support staff with other minor facility-related tasks as needed
Qualifications
The successful candidate will:
- Have experience in general building maintenance, property maintenance, construction, or related trades
- Possess troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Be able to work independently with minimal supervision
- Be physically capable of performing maintenance and groundskeeping duties
- Have a valid BC driver's license and reliable transportation
- Successfully complete a Criminal Record Check
- Be dependable, trustworthy, and respectful when working in a hospice environment
- Have a positive attitude and a willingness to contribute to a supportive team culture
Preferred
- Experience with older homes and heritage buildings
- Knowledge of basic plumbing, carpentry, painting, and minor repairs
- Retired or semi-retired individuals looking for meaningful part-time work are encouraged to apply
